Q&A: Dealing with Seasonal Allergies

Understanding Seasonal Allergies

Seasonal allergies, also known as hay fever or allergic rhinitis, are an immune system response to allergens in our environment. These allergens can include tree pollen, grass pollen, ragweed, or mold spores. When these allergens are breathed in, people with seasonal allergies may experience symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and even asthma.

Treating Seasonal Allergies

While there's no cure for seasonal allergies, the symptoms can be managed effectively. Over-the-counter antihistamines can help relieve sneezing, itching, a runny nose, and watery eyes. Decongestants can help with congestion. For severe symptoms, prescription medications or allergy shots may be needed.

Preventing Seasonal Allergies

Prevention is always better than cure. Some ways to prevent seasonal allergies include staying indoors on dry, windy days, delegating lawn mowing and other gardening chores, removing clothes you've worn outside and showering to rinse off pollen, and keeping doors and windows closed during allergy season.
