Vitamin D is a vital nutrient that our body needs for multiple functions, including, predominantly, the absorption of calcium and promoting bone health. This fat-soluble vitamin helps our body absorb calcium from the food we eat, which is fundamental in keeping our bones strong and healthy. Without it, our body cannot properly use the calcium we take in, leading to more serious health complications like osteoporosis and rickets, especially in children.

Vitamin D deficiency may not have obvious symptoms. It's often dubbed a 'silent condition' as one might feel fine even when their vitamin D levels are dangerously low. The primary source of vitamin D is direct sunlight. Small quantities are also obtained from food sources like oily fish, egg yolk, liver, and fortified products. Factors like a preference for indoor activities, use of sunscreen, geographical location, age, dark skin, and certain health conditions can affect vitamin D synthesis.

Addressing vitamin D deficiency is important. It involves improving dietary intake, sufficient sun exposure, or taking supplements where needed. Consistent monitoring of vitamin D levels is also recommended in at-risk individuals. It is always best to seek advice from your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement.
